Getting around

Public Transport

Getting around in Milan is quite easy, given the extensive public transport system. Most of the important sights can be visited on foot, as they are located in the historical center of the city itself. Apart from walking, the best way to get around Milan is to take the metro, tram and bus. Milan has 4 metro lines and an extensive network of tram and busses. For fares and maps of these lines you may consult the ATM Transport or the Milano Mobilità webiste.
For a more extended service at a very reasonable price you might consider buying a MilanoCard or the Yes Milano City Pass. With this card or pass you can freely use all public transport for one or more days as required. There are several options ranging in price from €15 to €45 but they all provide free public transport, 25€ cashback to use in local restaurants, 5€ for Taxi end a entrance ticket to the Duomo. You'll find the discounts mentioned at the respective entries in this guide. The MilanoCard or the Yes Milano City Pass can in advance be bought online.

Car

Getting around by car might not be the best idea in this busy and chaotic city. Parking is difficult and you may get stuck for some time in endless jams. To add to this the access to the historical center of Milan is limited by the Congestion Charge area (Area C) on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 7.30 to 19.30, and Thursday from 7.30 to 18. To get into “Area C” you must activate an entrance ticket of 5 euro.

The ticket worth 5 euro can be purchased at the parking meters, newsagents, tobacconists, ATM points, or calling the call center at the number +39.0248684001. See for more info on AreaC this website

Bike

Milan has a modern bike sharing system with stations all over the city, called BikeMI. By subscribing to BikeMi you will be able to use both traditional bikes and pedelecs at any of the docking stations. Depending on the type of the bike you choose, only the tariffs conditions change.

Airports

To get from and to the airports of Milan you may take the Autostradale bus shuttles from Milan Central Station, every day from 04.00 am to 11.00 pm buses to Malpensa Airport Terminal 1 and 2, Orio al Serio Bergamo Airport and Linate Airport.
